New York: Sheed & Ward. Very Good in Fair dj. 1951. First Edition. Hardcover. [moderate shelfwear, bookplate of Gerard Manley Hopkins on ffep (with one-time owner's signature in top margin); jacket very faded (title on front panel is virtually unreadable), extensive shallow chipping at edges, general soiling, etc.]. "What is it like to be born of parents who are highly educated, but unbelievably poor, to be a child taught to be religious because your parents consider some religion a good thing (though of course by no means so important as worldly success), and what is it like to find at eleven that your parents, both of whom you love dearly, are going to be divorced? And last but not least, what is it like to be colored and made to feel it from childhood on?" This is the story told by the then-23-year-old author, written while she was confined to a sanatorium with tuberculosis (like she didn't have enough going against her already). The point of the book is "to tell the story of a Negro in American society and to point out that the entire problem of racism can be reduced to a misunderstanding and misapplication of Christian principles." (Sounds pretty much like today, when most of the misunderstanding and misapplication of Christian principles is committed by the people most loudly proclaiming themselves to be Christians.) .
