by Goodacre, Selwyn H.; Schiller, Justin G.; [Carroll, Lewis]; [Tenniel, John]
New York: The Jabberwock, 1990. Very good.. First edition of this excellent reference book describing the Macmillan file copy used to evaluate the quality of printing of Lewis Carroll's classic story. The illustrator John Tenniel was famously displeased with the first 1865 printing of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, which caused Macmillan to suppress their original run of 2000 copies. This reference book includes a census of those copies that escaped Macmillan's recall, as well as a discussion of the book's tumultuous early publication history. It is supplemented by Schiller's index of Tenniel's original preliminary drawings for both ALICE and LOOKING-GLASS. 10'' x 6.5''. Original color pictorial boards in the style of Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Crimson endpapers. Illustrated in black-and-white throughout, with one fold-out. 112 pages, including index. Errata slip loosely laid in. Binding lamination beginning to lift at spine. Some damp staining to lower edge, becoming more mild moving to the center of the book. Sound.
