Dr. John Rae of the Hudson's Bay Company met an Eskimo in 1854 who furnished clues regarding Franklin's fate. M'Clintock used this information to find the actual remains, and discovered the only feasible passage by Montreal Island, through Rae Strait, the path later followed by Amundsen's first northwest passage.
