Long worked for the Hudson's Bay Company beginning in 1768 and travelled extensively among the Canadian Indians for nineteen years as a fur trader. "His knowledge of the character, customs, and domestic life of the Indians was therefore the most thorough and intimate. His relations are characterized by candor and intelligence..." - Field. The map depicts the territory of southern Canada as far west as the Great Lakes. The second work, first printed in 1780, is one of the keystone accounts of the history of Russian America, including a number of narratives of exploration not published elsewhere in English to that time.
