by [FAIRFAX Henry]
[London: S.n.] Printed in the Year, 1688. . Small 4to, disbound, spine showing evidence of previous pamphlet binding Wing F 124 Attributed by Wing to Henry Fairfax. Sometimes also attributed to Charles Aldworth, John Hough, and Francis Bagshaw. Wing also supplied the place of publication. In April 1687, KING James ordered the fellows of Magdalen College to elect a Catholic, Anthony Farmer, as their president. The fellows believed Farmer ineligible under the college's statutes and so elected John Hough instead. The college statutes required that the vacancy be filled within a certain time and so they could not wait for an alternate royal nomination. James refused to view Hough's election as valid and instructed the fellows to elect the Bishop of Oxford and sent an ecclesiastical commissioners to install him. The fellows then agreed to the Bishop of Oxfor, but then James required that they admit they had been in the wrong and ask for his pardon. The fellows refused and most of them were ejected and replaced by Catholics. This over-reaching of his powers by James II was one of many causes for his eventual ouster a year later, and the accptance of William and Mary as joint monarchs.
