New York: Greenberg: Publisher. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1936). First Edition. Hardcover. [spine very slightly turned, faint dust-soiling to top edge; jacket lightly faded at spine, faint soiling to front panel]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "To L. Alexander Mack, / as a souvenir of many years / of work and play with the author, / Chas. F. Howell --- / New York, August 24, 1936." Intermingled love story and travelogue, combining "an intelligently conducted tour through the [British] Isles" with the tale of a young American tourist who convinces her traveling companion that they should hire a handsome young Irishman as their courier (guide) on their jaunt through England, Ireland, and Wales, and gets (not unpleasantly) more than she bargained for. The author (1868-1943) was primarily a newspaperman who (per his NYTimes obit) specialized in insurance and marine topics, but he was also quite the traveler, and had previously published at least two books in that vein, "Around the Clock in Europe: A Travel-Sequence" (1912) and "An Irish Ramble" (1929); the present book, apparently his only excursion into fiction, was described by a contemporary critic as "a romanticized Baedeker."
