Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, 1935 & 1936. Original Preview Pass to Universal Pictures for Hollywood Columnist Jimmy Starr dated Sept. 1, 1935 to Aug. 30, 1936. Green cardstock, 3 7/8” x 2 1/2” with rounded corners. Studio passes were given to press and industry representatives, allowing the bearer access to the studio’s lot and sets. It reads in full: “Universal Preview Pass, Admit Two, Any Universal Press Preview, Mr. Jimmy Starr, Representing Publication Herald-Express, Good for Year, Sept. 1, 1935 to Aug. 30, 1936 (To be cancelled when bearer severs connections with his publication). Note - This pass good only for previews - Not for any other performance. Authorized by John Leroy Johnston in behalf of Universal Studio.” On the verso is a printed set of basic terms regarding the bearer’s use of the pass and is signed by Jimmy Starr. Mr. Starr’s name and Los Angeles Herald-Express are typed in as the recipient of the pass with “19” printed on the front of the card. Near fine with a hint of use and a bit of dust soiling. Jimmy Starr (1902 - 1990) is best known as a Hollywood columnist, though he was also a writer and actor, known for The Corpse Came C.O.D. (1947), A Night for Crime (1943) and Pink Pajamas (1929). Some of the Universal films Mr. Starr may have enjoyed in that time period include such popular productions as The Affair of Susan with Zasu Pitts, Diamond Jim with Edward Arnold, Jean Arthur, and Cesar Romero, Magnificent Obsession with Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor, Crash Donovan co-directed by William Nigh and Jean Negulesco (his directorial debut), and many more.
