John Matthew Gutch (1776-1861) was Lamb's contemporary, schoolfellow, and lifelong friend. He was the proprietor of "Felix Farley's Bristol Journal" in which some Lamb writing appeared, and was the author of Caraboo, the narrative of a famous 19th-century hoax.
