Book Description

London & Boston: Elkin Mathews & John Lane [later: John Lane] / Copeland & Day, April 1894 through April 1897.. Whole numbers one through thirteen, lacking number two. Sq. octavo. Pictorial yellow cloth, decorated with designs after Beardsley and others. Some rubbing, light edgewear to a few volumes, crowns of several spines a bit frayed, one crown has a short snag, occasional foxing and light soiling, but generally a good, sound set. Edited by Henry Harland, and with Aubrey Beardsley serving as art editor for the first four numbers. The most commonly accepted apogee of '90s sensibilities, and a focal point for several of the decades scandals and triumphs. The index of contributors is extensive and well- known. Some identified, and many unidentified reprints of individual volumes were produced in considerable quantities well beyond the original dates of publication, and the latter have been consciously or accidentally sold as first editions from the moment of their appearance. As Lasner notes, the details (which include presence/absence of ads, types and weights of paper, signature marks, etc) of those reprintings "are so perplexing that rational codification may well prove impossible." None of the volumes in the present accumulation include ads, and are ipso facto reprints. LASNER 65. SULLIVAN,et al, pp.457-9.
