AN APPRECIATION FOR KNOWLEDGE, HISTORY & CULTURE

ABAA membership is a privilege extended only to those booksellers who have demonstrated the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and expertise in the trade. Our more than four hundred members hail from an impressively diverse array of backgrounds. Some have spent their entire careers in the book business, while others have been lighthouse keepers, poets, helicopter pilots, and professional musicians. Some members own brick-and-mortar shops, some operate internet-only businesses from their home or office, some fashion livelihoods from exhibiting at book fairs. Many combine these retail strategies, or add services such as appraising and collection development. A few earn additional income and professional prestige from research and writing. But all our members share an appreciation for the printed page and for the scholarly and ethical practices which exemplify professional bookselling.

Archival Video Interviews of Members

A few years ago, Michael Ginsberg embarked upon an archival journey for the ABAA. Recognizing the absence of member histories in the ABAA annals, Michael began conducting video interviews of members at our three annual fairs. The interviews cover members' personal histories as well as their involvement in the rare book trade.

The ABAA extends many thanks to Michael, as well as Taylor Bowie, who has also conducted a number of interviews.

David and Denise Carlson met on a cruise. It was their mutual interest in auctions that brought them into the rare books business: when one lot of books they bought immediately resulted in interest and offers well above their purchase price D & D Galleries was born. D & D Galleries operates out of Somerville, NJ and specializes in Bindings, American & English Literature, Lewis Carroll, Association Copies, and Charles Dickens. ABAA Member since 1989. Sunday and Josh came to New York after school to pursue careers. The chance purchase of a book on the street for one dollar started them down the path to antiquarian bookdealers. They began selling on eBay as simply a side hustle, but as their passion grew for the material and the subject matter they left their other careers behind and in 2008 went full time. Sunday represents the new generation of Antiquarian bookseller young and excited by the antiquarian world, fully social media and internet capable and enthusiastic about the ABAA and what it provides to the community.B &amp; B Rare Books Rare Books operates out of an open shop in New York City and specializes in 19th &amp; 20th Century American and English Literature, Modern First Editions, and Signed and Presentation Copies. Edward Pollack, a career lawyer, first began selling books in the 1960’s from a small shelf in an antique shop. The antiques eventually fell by the wayside and by 1985 he was a full-fledged bookseller.Edward T. Pollack operates out of Portland, ME, and specializes in Illustrated Books, Children’s Books, Books about Art, Artists & Photography, Prints & Drawings by 19th and 20th Century American and European Artists.
