The film is set in 16th century Japan and tells the story of a powerful warlord who dies and is replaced by a poor thief, chosen to impersonate the fallen leader, but who finds his new role more of a burden than a joy. The film received two Oscar nominations - Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Foreign Language Film - Japan.
