Book Description
Munchen: NDSAP, 1933 The book itself is not scarce but here is mounted on the endpapers a photograph taken of Dr. Joseph Goebbels at a party of Germans and Van Hees. The original owner wrote [our translation] "Wonderful how simple the leader in his greatness and how great his simplicity." Picture has Major [WWI rank] Heimert [father of the book owner's host, E. von Bulow [though she preferred not to use the 'von'] He goes on to note that Mrs von Bulow...didn't care for the nazies, although she never said so. But it was clear she considered them uncouth or opportunistic. She gave me this book because she thought Goebbels was charming. (I had asked her for a keepsake] She had not read the book ...the picture was taken at Hubertushof (sp?). St. Hubertus is the patron saint of hunters. signed W. Van Hees, 10/7/82..Elizabeth Below wrote on August 15 1936 "a remembrance of the great times at Hubertshof. Elizabeth Below wishes dear Will van Hees all that's good. A later letter [laid in at end of book] by van Hees describes the circumstances of his visit with his brother Gilles van Hees to Germany in 1936. Later there is a note he returned to Germany in 1945 but was unable to visit the area where his memories were so profound. The Von Below family was quite famous in German military history. Ferdinand von Below, General Major, died in the first year of the Franco-Prussian War and Fritz von Below who was General of the Infantery died in 1918. A very nice way of seeing the mixed feelings of Germans and outsiders who mixed socially with one of the major architects of the Nazi ideology. Today this area is a camping area and Epstein seems to often be spelled Eppstine which on the West is Wiesbaden and the community Niedernhausen as described in the author's notes.. Cloth. A Good Copy. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
