Brandao & Co., 1887. . 8vo, tan wrappers, front printed; small chip on front cover and some breaks in spine cover Born in Kentucky, graduate of Yale, Johnson got his law degree at the University of Kentucky and practiced law until the outbreak of the Civil War, after being wounded he was made aide de camp to Jefferson Davis and was captured with him, spending a year in solitary confinement at Pea Patch island. After a year in Canada, Johnston went back to Kentucky and in 1867 Robert E. Lee asked him to teach at what is now Washington and Lee where he remained for ten years. In 1880 he became president of Louisiana State University, leaving in 1883 to become the first president of Tulane
