Max Nordau (1849-1923) was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organizations and achieved renown as a philosopher, writer, and orator for the Jewish People. It was Nordau who drafted the Basel Program at the First Zionist Congress (1897). As a speechmaker, he addressed numerous Zionist congresses, always examining the status of the Jew in the world, his condition, his plight, and the impact of emancipation. When Nordau was once told about Herzls "insane" plans for a Zionist state, he replied to Herzl, If you are insane, we are insane together. This rare complilation of Nordaus speeches provides insight into his firsthand assessment of the oppressive conditions of the Jews worldwide, the status of anti-Semitism, and his hope for a Jewish Homeland as a refuge for Jewish life and safety.
