Book Description

Wilber’s Book of Hebrew and Other Parodies (MUSIC/HUMOR) WILBER, Edward H. Wilber’s Book of Hebrew and Other Parodies. Chicago: Heidorn Brothers, 1902. 18pp. Bright pictorial orange wrappers. Hinges quite tender, otherwise Very Good Condition. Wilber states that these song parodies, based on such classics as The Good Old Summertime and Hello Central, are written “to your order. Write for terms, stating your wants.” One presumes then that these were ordered by a most jocular vaudevillian looking to connect with his Jewish audience--- politically correct they are not, but neither are they bigoted. Hello! Goldstein, dis is Cohen I’m not feeling vell. Don’t look for me up in heaven, I’m down here in ---- St. Louis. Never start another fire, Try and save your soul, Or you’ll get a job down here, Shov’ling in de coal. Or: Mosie vit his big nosie can make an awful breeze Sometimes ve think its winter Vhen he should happen to make a sneeze. And: Just because I made dem Jew-jew eyes My face for me he quickly did disguise He cleaned de sidewalk up and my face vas his mop Just because I made dem Jew-jew eyes.

Not sure what some of these terms mean? Look it up in our glossary.
