Book Description
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, [1825]. xi, [i], 122, [2]pp., 18mo. With the half-title and a terminal advertisement leaf. A fine fresh copy, untrimmed in the original printed drab boards, spine covering mostly gone, but sound. Second edition, but considerably reworked, with revisions to the verse and the prose notes expanded. Some occasional pieces in the first edition, published in 1821, are here omitted in order to concentrate on the title poem alone. The poet started his working life as a weaver, but went on to become a wine and spirit merchant in Derby, where this poem was printed, and near which is its subject, in the Peak District. The Wordsworths called Edwards ingenious, and Edwards returned the compliment in this edition by, among other things, including a long passage from Wordsworths Tour of the Lakes in the notes. Johnson, Provincial Poetry, 306.
