Book Description

London: Richard Bentley, 1848 First edition, first issue: with "Provinces of America" on title page (the second issue reads, "Provinces of North America"). 2 volumes. Pp. viii, 344 + vii, [1], 343, [1]. Publisher's blind stamped maroon cloth, gilt-lettered spines. Engraved armorial bookplate in each volume. Some light chipping to spine ends, spines faded. The slightest of foxing to preliminary leaves of volume I, but a superior set, fine and clean. A superior copy in the original cloth of a title often found in poor condition or rebound. Very scarce thus! Frank Forester was the pseudonym of the writer, Henry William Herbert (1807-1858). Herbert, born in London in 1807, was educated at Eton and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1831 his debts forced him to emigrate to the United States where he taught Latin at a private school in New York. In 1883 he founded the American Monthly Magazine and in 1834 published his first novel, The Brothers: A Tale of the Fronde. This was the first of many similar historical fictions which he interspersed with factual works. Probably his most enduring works were his books on hunting written under the pseudonym of Frank Forester of which the present title was the first. Covers Upland Shooting (Snipe, Woodcock, Quail, Grouse, etc.); Duck Shooting; Sporting Dogs; Bay Shooting (Sandpipers, Tatlers, Plovers, etc.); Wild Fowl of all sorts; Wilderness Hunting (Bison, Elk, Moose, Wild Turkey, Grizzly Bear, etc.); Forest and Prairie Sports; Bear Hunting; Turkey Shooting, etc..
