This well-illustrated and comprehensive work covers literally everything from artificial limbs to Zouaves, and much, much more such as the Hotchkiss magazine gun; hygrometer; military medals; mechanics; mining; mountain warfare; ordnance; Parker gun; pneumatic gun carriage; riots; Roman legions; Russian army; saber exercises; Signal Service; Smith and Wesson revolver; sporting arms; steam engine; strategy; submarine drilling; surgery; target practice; telegraph; tents; torpedoes; tunneling; turbines; veterinary science; etc. The work is illustrated with hundreds of small text engravings as well as numerous full-page and folding plates (some in color). These plates show everything from swords, machinery, guns and their parts, helmets, cartridges, machine guns, cannons, sporting arms, mining equipment, telegraphs, water wheels, telescopes, fortifications, foundries, gun-carriages, gun-making machinery, machine guns, ordnance, projectiles, small arms; stone-cutters, tunneling equipment, and more. The last 175 pages of volume III contain 88 wood-engraved plates (printed on recto of each leaf) of general and special subjects, keyed to their discussion within the text. The author was assistant instructor of tactics at the United States Military Academy, and an officer in the Nez Perce campaign..
