An American poet and novelist, he is best known for the Spoon River Anthology (1915). In it, Masters tells the story of a small town through a series of free-verse monologue epitaphs. He also wrote Mitch Miller, The Nuptial Flight and a biography of Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln the Man. WILLIAM STANLEY BRAITHWAITE (1878-1962). Braithwaite was an African-American poet and critic. He taught for more than two decades at Atlanta University. TLS. 1pg. 8" x 10". April 6, 1916. Chicago. A typed letter signed "E.L. Masters" on his legal letterhead. He wrote to Braithwaite: "I am enclosing according to promise some lines on Shakespeare for your tercentenary edition, and hope they will in a measure meet your needs. Some day I intend to try my hand at a Shakespearian tribute with better results I trust than this. Much luck to your venture." The letter is attached to another sheet and is in fine condition overall. A fine reference by a prominent American poet to Shakespeare
