Niles was an American folk composer and vocalist. Called the "Dean of American Balladeers," he is best known for his song "Go 'Way from My Window," as well as many traditional ballads of the Appalachian region. <P> TLS. 1pg. 8 " x 10 ¾". No date. New York. A typed letter signed <I>"<B>Jack</B>"</I> in pencil to political cartoonist Abian A. "Wally" Wallgren: <I>"Saw Lee... He likes the man with the Gun very much... Don't change it... Make the others as fast as possible... Another thing... Sit down and write General la Jeune a letter and tell him you want him to write a short preface say about 250 words about the singing of the Marines... We want to use it in the front of our book... And also... You know Pershing better than any of us... Would you try to get him to do the same thing... just about 250 or 300 words... It will help up a hell of a lot... After we get thru you will find that you have written and illustrated the goddamed</I> [sic] <I>thing yourself... Helens is on her way to Iowa... I am working like a bastard... "</I>. Typed on Niles' personal stationery, the letter is in very good condition with the usual mailing folds and a couple of margin chips that affect nothing
