With an introduction by Lawrence Durrell, a foreword by Carl Shapiro and a postscript by Miller himself in 1966: "In a way, of course, it was truly a crazy time, this period of the Villa Seurat and the Impasse du Rouet. The day might begin at five A.M. or two P.M., according to the astrologic happenings the night before. There were always "happenings", whether premeditated or not. The war was drawing close, there was nothing to be won or lost, and though we were merely so much flotsam and jetsam in the stream of current events, we each and all retained our identity and our individuality. In addition we were all exiles. We had no real home. All we demanded of life was temporary shelter, and that Paris gave us." Written by Miller for his friend, the painter Hans Reichel, and consisting of letters to the artist written over a period of 5 weeks, beginning Christmas Eve 1937. Miller comments on all manner of things, including Rudolph Steiner: "He is a Jack-the-Ripper masquerading as a saint." Contains a self portrait of Reichel and a full page original photograph of Miller by Ina Paulandre (protected by tissue guard), various other illustrations and Miller's poem about Steiner, "Miasma." A stunning production that won several international awards. Slipcase in very good, book in fine condition.
