Contemporary half morocco (worn at extremities, one cover detached). Most plates with some foxing, chiefly in the blank margins. First edition of one of the most popular mid-nineteenth century works illustrating America. Bartlett travelled from New England south to Virginia and west to Niagara Falls, drawing some of the most spectacular American scenery. His drawings were engraved by a host of skillful artists and accompanied by text of N. P. Willis. Nearly all copies exhibit some degree of foxing on the plates.
