FIRST EDITION, the second of two privately printed editions. The first being printed in 1834. Finally published in 1862. INSCRIBED on the half-title by the editor, the author's father, to Mrs. [Sarah] Austin, an old friend who was asked to write a biography of the young Hallam but refused. Hallam was a great friend of Lord Alfred Tennyson and is the subject of Tennyson's "In Memoriam A.H.H." Hallam was engaged to Tennyson's sister Emilia at the time of his death. She later married and named her son after Hallam.
