Book Description

1730. [Catholic Church]. [Rota Romana]. Sacrae Rotae Romanae Decisiones Recentiores in Compendium Redactae: Ad Modum Indicis per Materias & Tractatus. In Quinque Tomos a Nonnullis Mediolanensis Athenaei Sociis Distributae. Milan: Apud Carolum Joseph Gallum, 1730-31. Six volumes in five books. Complete set. With index volume (Volume VI). Main text in parallel columns. Folio (13-1/2" x 9"). Contemporary vellum, raised bands and early hand-lettered titles, volume numbers and shelf numbers to spines. Light soiling and a few minor stains, boards somewhat bowed, joints of first book just beginning at ends, rear free endpaper lacking from fourth book, fifth book has a clean tear to final index leaf and a missing endleaf. Title pages, each with large copperplate vignette, printed in red and black, other vignettes to dedication leaves. Negligible toning, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. An impressive set. * Only edition (in this form). With indexes and comprehensive index volume (that is often missing from copies of this set). Comprising cases from 1558 to 1683, this is an alphabetically arranged digest of Rota decisions based on a non-digested compilation that was begun in the seventeenth century by Prospero Farinacci, continued by others and published in 25 volumes in 1716. It is a fascinating work rich with insight into the Church's intimate connection with European society. Ferreira-Ibarra, The Canon Law Collection of the Library of Congress 145.
