A Japanese dive-bomber kamikaze attact in the South Pacific on March 19, 1945 left the aircraft carrier USS Franklin severely damaged. Taylor led a group of fellow seamen in a successful attempt to use cutting torches to release the anchor and use the 540-foot chain as a tow line.
