New York Harper & Brothers 1897 Hardcover First edition 567; 714; 4pp. Large octavo [24 cm] Gray cloth with gilt, silver, red, and green ink stamped designs and titles to the front covers. Gilt stamped titles on the spines. Top edges gilt. An etched frontispiece, photogravures and 4 maps in pockets of volume 1. Complete. Very good. The edges of the covers are lightly rubbed and bumped. The spine of volume 1 is slightly indented, and the text block is cracked at the beginning. Small damp stains on the front and rear endsheets and on a few internal pages of volume 1. The hinges of volume 2 are a little weak, the endsheets are very subtly cracked along the hinges, and the text block is cracked at the beginning. The edges of the pages are occasionally slightly chipped.
