Book Description

Amsterdam: Gerard Valk & Petrus Schenk, circa 1700. Engraving with lovely early colour. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition, with the exception of a printers crease in bottom left section of map. Center fold as usual where it was bound into an atlas. 18 3/16 x 20 5/8 inches. 20 7/8 x 24 9/16 inches. A stunning map showing the southwest provinces of China, by the celebrated Dutch publishers Schenk and Valk. Following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson publishing houses, Schenk and Valk became the leading mapmakers in Amsterdam. Towards the end of the seventeenth century Schenk acquired Jansson's lucrative business and proceeded to republish some of his most successful atlases. In addition to republished atlases, Schenk and Valk published books, prints and globes specializing in reworked plates from the publishing houses of Jansson, Visscher and Sanson. This beautiful map shows the southwest provinces of China, including Hainan and the Pearl River Estuary. The provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong are depicted and the principal towns are marked by a dark red dot. Originally published by Jansson, Schenk and Valk reissued this impression in the early eighteenth century. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici Vol. III, p. 109-121, no. 425; Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers 34
