Clark Old South III, 51: "Hamilton traveled from Baltimore to Ellicott Mills on a horse-drawn railroad, thence by stage to Wheeling, and by boat to Cincinnati and Louisville. He then descended the Ohio and Mississippi to New Orleans, crossed Lakes Pontchartrain and Borgne and continued by stage to Mobile, ascended by boat to Montgomery, and proceeded by stage, through Fort Mitchell, Macon, Milledgeville, and Augusta, to Charleston, where he sailed for New York. He called his work the conclusions of an independent observer, but admitted that he may have been influenced by the prejudices natural to an Englishman."
