Demidoff, who was an Italian prince married to a Russian countess and speculated to be the richest man in the world, undertook the expedition in order to acquire spectacular trophies (photos of which are included in this volume). According to the publisher of this edition, "If the group would have to rough it in uncivilized and inaccessible wilds, Demidoff saw to it that they would rough it in the best possible style ... with cook and valet, their personal physician, even a pet lap dog."
