[WITH] CONSTITUTION OF WEST VIRGINIA; [WITH] ACT OF THE LEGISLATION OF WEST VIRGINIA, 1863 ... etc.~This copy with the signature of Henry C. Dickinson of Bedford County, Virginia, Captain in Company A, Second Virginia Cavalry. Dickinson was captured and incarcerated in Federal prisons at Morris Island, Pulaski and Point Lookout. Laid in is a broadside: "Assessor's Notice for Legacy and Succession Taxes" printed up for the "United States Internal Revenue", Assistant Assessor's Office, 5th Division in Virginia by order of Thos. A. Conklin, Assistant Assessor of that Office. There is a pencilled note on the back regarding the death of Col. Wm. Dickinson and the applicability, or not, of the law passed June 30, 1864. Assistant Assessor Conklin directs the recipient to report to his office on, or before the 1st day of Jan., 1867. An interesting artifact from the early days of Reconstruction.~In contemporary calf over marbled boards, with morocco labels.
