Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1867. First separate edition, BAL 12144. Presentation copy, bearing a card pasted to the recto of the frontis that reads, “with kind regards and / good wishes of / the author / Oct 15, 1867.” The book is also signed by the author on the title page. This copy also has had an autograph signed letter laid-in, declining to send material for publication in a children’s periodical. It reads in full: “Cambridge Nov 26 / 1879 // Dear Sir, // I am very sorry that I / cannot send you a contri- / bution for your ‘Young / People”; but hae nothing / which would be at all ap- / propriate. // Yours very truly // Henry W. Longfellow.” Octavo, gilt-stamped green cloth (hardcover), beveled edges, all edges gilt, 72 pp. Frontis and 4 additional plates. At one time the book was part of a prep school library and bears a small stamp on the title indicating such. At a later time, it was professionally and nicely rebacked. The frontis plate is loose. Generally, the book is in nice condition, perhaps Very Good. (Inventory #: 5271fd)
