FREMONT'S ROMANISM ESTABLISHED. ACKNOWLEDGED BY ARCHBISHOP HUGHES [caption title
1856 · [N.p
by [Fremont, John C.]
[N.p, 1856. 16pp. Stitched, as issued. Previously folded. Faint contemporary ownership inscription on first leaf verso. Light tanning, foxing, dampstaining. Good plus. A detailed and ambitious attempt to stop the drift of anti-Catholic Northerners from the Know-Nothings to the Republican Party by claiming that Fremont, the Republican presidential candidate in 1856, was in fact Catholic and a stalking horse for the Catholic hierarchy. Also attacks the Republicans for hypocrisy in nominating a candidate who had voted against the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia while briefly in the U.S. Senate.
