1891 · London
by Peters, Carl, 1856-1918
London: Ward, Lock, and Co, 1891. 1st Edition in English. Hardcover. Fair. frontis (portrait), illustrations, index, xviii, (1), 597p. Original reddish pictorial cloth. Rebacked with most of original worn backstrip mounted. 22cm. Covers faded, worn and scuffed. Contents sound although lacking the folding map. Translated from the original German by H. W. Dulcken. A worn (and mapless) copy of a scarce work. Peters was a bit of an adventurer. It seems unclear whether his actions during this expedition were sanctioned by Germany. At any rate, Germany and Great Britain concluded the second Anglo-German Agreement on July 1, 1890 under which any claims to East African territory secured by Peters for Germany were casually abandoned by the Germans. Peters was later sent to Africa as a German colonial official but highhanded mistreatment of Africans led to his dismissal and forfeiture of his pension rights. Undaunted, Peters moved to England and continued as an adventurer and promoter.
