Ypsilanti, Michigan: University Lithoprinters, 1942. First Edition. Rare! Maude Rufus Squires (1880-1945) was known as the first "Flying Grandmother." She received her pilot's license in 1940, when she was 60 years old and took off in her bright-red Cub Coupe airplane to fly around the country. She was Chairman of the Michigan Chapter of the Ninety-Nine aviation club. Rufus was killed on June 19, 1945 when her plane crashed in Washington, Pa after hitting a downdraft after taking off from a farmer's field and her wing clipped a tree. Signed by Rufus on a front blank page, with another inscription (in another hand) above it. This title is scarce and signed copies are probably rare!. 8vo., blue cloth, stamped in gilt; 168 pages.
