before 1878. Original patterned silk cloth.. Very good; silk covering showing moderate wear.. Oblong 4to, 12 hand painted mounted silk gouache scenes of life with three dimensional representation of figures in traditional dress at their individual trades. Bound together accordion style.
An unusual and captivating panorama composed of 12 individual shadowbox views each measuring appx. 21 x 29 cm. There is a presentation inscription on the front board to a doctor A[dolphe] Vauvray resident in Hong Kong and dated Dec. 12, 1878; he was chief of medical services on New Caledonia. Each panel of the panorama is painted on silk. Each panel is populated with figures, in relief and great detail, in traditional dress and demonstrating a trade. So composed, the scenes provide a remarkable view of the work and habitations of the Japanese. (Inventory #: 17042)
