[very slight bumping to lower extremities, about a 1/2" crack in top of spine (integrity of binding unaffected), no other significant wear]. (B&W photographs) Extensive survey of the career of Hollywood director John M. Stahl, best known for what were once called "women's pictures" (such as BACK STREET, IMITATION OF LIFE, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, etc.), but who turned out at least one bona fide, undeniable masterpiece, the delirious 1945 Technicolor melodrama LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. Issued in conjunction with a retrospective of the director's work at the 1999 San Sebastian International Film Festival, the book presents nearly two dozen articles, essays and critiques; contributors include Andrew Sarris, Joe Adamson, Jean-Loup Bouget, Bertrand Tavernier, Marshall Deutelbaum, and Miguel Marias. Also included are a complete "critical filmography" and a bibliography. All text is presented in both Spanish and English. As far as I'm aware this is the most extensive analysis of Stahl's ouevre ever published. ***NOTE: Additional shipping charges for this heavy book will apply for non-U.S. customers; please inquire before placing your order.*** .
