Secacus NJ: Citadel Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1985). First Edition. Hardcover. 0806509767 . [minimal shelfwear, a tiny trace of foxing to top of text block; jacket lightly rubbed, minor edgewear, soft vertical crease at bottom of front panel]. (B&W photographs) "A complete account of Howard Hughes's career as a film mogul," a spotty track record that includes such classics as HELL'S ANGELS, SCARFACE and THE OUTLAW (all of which are discussed at some length) and such turkeys as MAD WEDNESDAY (aka THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK), VENDETTA and THE CONQUEROR. (Come to think of it, I should have included THE OUTLAW with the turkeys, too.) About a third of the book is devoted to Hughes's stewardship (if that's the right word) of RKO Studios, which he ran from 1948 until 1955, selling it off after having pretty much delivered it to death's doorstep. The book concludes with a brief chapter called "Hollywood Afterlife," which discusses Hughes's post-RKO years and also a few of the cinematic depictions of the increasingly reclusive (and wacko) mogul. .
