first edition Half Morocco
1808-1809 · London
by Pugin, Augustus and Thomas Rowlandson
London: R. Ackermann. Printer: T Bensley, 1808-1809. First edition. Half Morocco. Very Good. The most indispensable of the great hand-colored plate books issued by Ackermann in the early nineteenth century! Folio. 34 by 27 cm. iv, 228, vi, 239, iv, [2], 280, [6] pp., and 104 hand-colored plates in the three volumes -- collates fully, with several plates misnumbered, as the norm. Condition: bindings all have light but discernible dampstain on leather by their spines. Dampstaining of some leaves in all volumes -- heavy-ish only in prelims and half-title. Elsewhere, where appears, on edges, and lighter. Some other occasional light foxing and soiling. Plates are generally clean, though. Text blocks are all solid, and overall, this is a solid, and attractive, if imperfect, set, and priced accordingly.
