Silk moire endpapers followed by marbled paper fly leaves. All paper edges gilt. Binding signed by Charles Meunier (1865-1940), a renown Parisian binder noted for his innovative and energetic approach to binding, with his impressive repertoire of binding tricks, including inlay, onlay, paint, gilding, marbling, tooling, and cuir ciselé. Tissue-guarded frontispiece in two states. Title page in brick and black lettering. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. Book housed in a custom made red cloth covered slipcase.Originally published in 1896, "Les Bains de Bade" is the author's second novel. This limited edition published by the "Société des Dilettantes" is splendidly illustrated throughout numerous head-, and tailpieces, as well as six full page engravings in two states by Armand Rassenfosse (1862-1934), a largely self-taught Belgian graphic artist, book illustrator and painter. His masterwork was a set of illustrations for Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal."One of 25 copies (No. 18) on Japan paper, with plates in two states, followed by 200 copies on Holland van Gelder paper (total run 225).Text in French. Slipcase, binding and interior in very good condition. * René Boylesve (1867-1926), born René Marie Auguste Tardiveau, was a French writer and a literary critic. Boylesve was orphaned early and went to school in Poitiers and Tours. In 1895 he began to publish articles in various journals. He is considered the heir of Honoré de Balzac and precursor of Marcel Proust. In 1919 he was inducted into the Académie française. (From Wikipedia).
