Philadelphia: Carey and Lea, 1832. First Edition. Paperback. Good+. First American edition. vi, 195, (36, ads); iv, 202 pp. Two Volumes. Original cloth and paper-covered boards with paper spine labels. Good+ copies with chipped and well-worn labels (still legible), boards stained and edge-worn, moderate to heavy foxing throughout contents. Textblock of Vol. 1 split at p. 126 and spine starting as well. Unsophisticated copies in their original bindings, and not institutional, quite rare thus. The very first translation of Russian fiction published in the United States, preceding the late 19th century boom. [Line p. 16] A satirical historical novel. It has also been called the first bestseller in Russia, outselling the more critically-acclaimed poetry of Pushkin, with whom Bulgarin publicly feuded.
