by Catullus; Tibullus; Propertius | Joseph Scaliger (Editor)
Lvtetiae [Paris]: Apud Mamertum Patissonium, in officina Rob. Stephani, 1577. Full Leather. Very Good binding. A First Edition copy of Joseph Scaliger's controversial nova edition of Catullus, Tibullus, and Propertius. According to Jacob Bernays "this was Scaliger's most methodical edition, the one which marked his complete triumph over the vanity and incompetence of Italian correctors... Timpanaro has argued that this edition of Catullus is the most remarkable anticipation of Lachmann's method before the eighteenth century." One volume, printed in two parts, with separate title page, pagination, and register; woodcut engraved vignettes on the title pages. [16], 274, [2], 252, [16] pp. Final leaf blank; E7 and S2 also blanks, all present. Spot of staining affecting the fore edge of about the last thirty pages. Attractive full calf, with raised bands; lettering and decoration stamped in gilt in compartments. Joints cracked but holding tight. Very Good. (Grafton, Anthony T.
