Browne (Phiz) including frontispiece and vignette title-page. Eight-line errata page bound behind the list of plates. Plates are generally clean, some peripheral foxing, vignette title-page slightly more than others. Contains most first issue points as noted in Smith 8; including Captain Cuttle's hook on his left hand in vignette title-page and plate facing p.238. This copy was bound from the original parts with stab holes easily identified. This Dickens title also contains the first example of a so-called dark plate and is found on p.547. This is also the first time that Browne created some horizontal illustrations for a Dickens work (five appear in Dombey and Son). Originally appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, from October 1846-April 1848. The book form was first published on April 12, 1848. 624pp.. First English Edition.
