by Old Sleuth
New York: J.S. Ogilvie Publishing Company. Fair. (c.1897). Unstated edition. Softcover. [fragile publication, external soiling and handling wear, some damage along spine, pulp paper browned but not brittle]. (Old Sleuth's Own series, No. 79) Series One of the innumerable "dime novels" that were aimed at young male readership in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this one part of the "Old Sleuth's Own" series (by "that famous writer," per the ad listing other series titles, in the back of the book). The story itself is only 86 pages long, and is followed by 12 pages of ads, mostly for other book series such as the "Shield Detective Series" and "Ogilvie's Hand Book Series"; the rear-cover ad is for the "Eureka Detective Series." The 1897 copyright date notwithstanding, this particular book was certainly printed years later; one of the ads is for "Novels Founded on Popular Plays and Moving Pictures," which suggests a printing date closer to 1910 or later. .
