Two years after the discovery of the bacterium Wherry and Lamb were the first to isolate it from lesions in a human case. Tularemia, or "rabbit fever", is a plaguelike disease of rodents. In man it is caused by direct contact with infected animals and is one of a handful of bacteria that infect both animal and man. It is the only disease in man that has been elucidated solely by American investigators. G-M #5175; see AMA, Fifty-One Landmark Articles in Medicine, chapter 20. (Inventory #: 18074)
