By Westall, William
London: Rodwell & Martin. C. Hullmandel, printer, 1822. Half Calf. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. Folio. 42.5 by 31.5 cm. 25 hand-colored views, all depicting a calm, lovely, bucolic riverfront, all populated by a few people in Regency dress, both polite and rustic, to lend scale and interest. Coloring is generally of a soft palette, creating an appealing dreamy haziness to the panoramas. Abbey Scenery 434. A slightly complicated bibliographic accounting for this work. It is complete in itself, other than our copy is without a title. Shortly afterward ten plates were added to make 35 views. We would note that generally copies encountered of this work are without coloring, although Abbey's copy of 35 views is described in a note as colored lithographs. Armorial bookplate of John Spicer, Esher Place. Condition: moderate wear to the cover, with a few abrasions or rubbed areas, and typical edgewear. Scattered, mostly light, foxing. A few repaired closed tears in the margins of the plates.
