by [Income Tax].
Printed form. 4 pages, a single folded folio sheet (11½x7¾"). Some darkening, soiling and light staining, some chips and tears along edges, wear at folds with a few small holed, edge wear; good. An early United States income tax form - the first personal income tax was instituted in 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. However, the income tax would be repealed in 1872, but unfortunately the 16thAmendment made it a permanent part of our lives in 1913. Space is given for listing salary, rental income, dividends, profits from sale of gold, etc., and losses from it. There is a standard $1,000 personal deduction, "Exempt by law." While the form clearly states the penalties invoked by failure to pay, the recipient of the form evidently chose to risk the consequences, and did not fill out the form. (Inventory #: 106633)
