This second collection of poetry, 943 poems, composed between 1915 and 1922, published shortly after Mandelstam moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow with his new wife Nadezhda. Here he express the inner exile of the poet in communist Russia. He borrows the title from Ovid (Sorrows) who was physically exiled to Tomis, Romania for reasons that remain unknown today.
