Buenos Airies: Elisheva, 1936. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Duodecimo. 7x 5 1/4". 188pp. [4]. Illustrated beige, green and black wrappers, with black and green lettering on the front cover. Includes both Yiddish and Spanish-language title pages. This work examines the history of Yiddish theater pioneer Abraham Goldfaden (1840-1908), and his collaboration with acclaimed actor Sigmund Mogulesko (1858-1914), who founded the first professional Yiddish theater troupe, in Iasi, Romania in 1876. The final three pages includes advertisements for Zylbercweig's famous Leksikon fun yidishn teater (Lexicon or Encyclopedia of the Yiddish Theatre).

Wrappers with some rubbing, chipping and/or closed tears to extremities . Light chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Interior with age toning to the edges of the pages. Light creasing to the bottom corner of the pages. Book block tight overall. Wrappers in good+, interior in very good condition overall. Scarce. Protected by modern mylar. Zalmen Zylbercweig (1894-1972) was amoung the greatest historians of Yiddish theater, and his magnum opus
"Leksikon fun yidishn teater (Lexicon the Yiddish Theatre, or Encyclopedia of the Yiddish Theatre)" is considered the largest and most comprehsive work on the subject ever written. The first volume was published in 1931, and entually expanded to encompase a total of six volumes published through 1969. (Inventory #: 45974)
