The author's first book, a Vietnam War novel, by the author who went on to write *Forrest Gump*. Inscribed by Groom to Jamie Jones, only son of his friend, the novelist James Jones: "To Jamie, From your ole Buddy. All best, Winston. May, 1978." A sort of dedication copy. The book was dedicated to both Groom's father, and to James Jones, who died in 1977.
