Hartford: A. D. Worthington and Compan, 1888. 700pp. including in-text illustrations, plus seventeen plates (eight of them chromolithographs) and frontispiece. Gilt pictorial red cloth, spine gilt. Spine sunned. Generally quite clean internally. Very good. "Well known, valuable reminiscences; especially good for accounts of military hospitals and relief work" - Nevins. Mary Livermore, an abolitionist, social worker, and women's rights advocate, served as a nurse for the Union Army and organizer of civilian support and supplies throughout the Civil War. This book is a record of her experiences during the conflict, both at home and on the front, and provides an interesting perspective of a non-combatant who had a chance to view some of the most brutal and noble aspects of the war. The chromolithographs show Union and Confederate battle flags, and the engravings are dramatic scenes from the front lines. NEVINS II, p.130 (Inventory #: WRCAM55006)
